Ar Y Gweill by Karina Geddes

Ar y Gweill reflects Karina’s engagement with textile traditions historically practised by working-class women—methods defined by endurance, care, and intentionality. Drawing from motifs and patterns found in utilitarian artefacts within the Amgueddfa textiles collection, such as samplers, pockets, and quilts, the work reconsiders the artistry embedded in objects once made out of necessity. Through this, Karina foregrounds the overlooked creative labour of women whose practices shaped both domestic and cultural life.

The work also explores the artist’s own position as a working-class practitioner operating within a contemporary art context, interrogating the classed and gendered hierarchies that persist within the field.

Documenting the making process through short-form video revealed tensions between the tactile, time-based nature of textile practice and the reductive tendencies of digital display. While online platforms promise accessibility and visibility, they often diminish material presence and process. Ar y Gweill therefore functions as both a celebration of working-class women’s creative heritage and an inquiry into how traditional, embodied practices can be meaningfully translated within the conditions of contemporary digital culture.
